IVY CHAN

Hi! My name is Ivy and I'm a second year student at UC San Diego. I was born and raised in Southern California, specifically the area east of Los Angeles, known as the San Gabriel Valley, or commonly referred to as the 626. Although many cities in the 626 are Asian-centric, I actually lived most of my life in a predominantly Hispanic community, and it wasn’t until much later that I was able to explore more of the surrounding cities. Up until that point, boba was always a “me and my family” thing because if I mention it or someone else sees me drinking some drink with black chewy things inside, it was seen as such a weird sight. Over the years, I’ve watched the popularity of boba rise into a mainstream drink for everyone and as the creator of Boba Culture, I’d love to share my experience, observations, and research.

BOBA CULTURE

Boba Culture was created with the intent of welcoming people to the popular drink that has formed its own culture, especially in Southern California. To dive into SoCal’s boba culture, we go over what boba is, its cultural roots, how to order, and recommendations. We welcome all newcomers and anyone who wants to simply enter or learn more about boba. With the ever increasing popularity of boba in the United States, it can be difficult or even intimidating to just start out and try boba, especially when there’s so many different types that can get overwhelming or confusing. Boba culture hopes to mitigate some of that intimidation to welcome everyone to the world of boba!
