HOW TO ORDER BOBA

Updated: Mar 14, 2020

for the newcomers to boba culture

Boba in itself is an enjoyable drink, and given its rising popularity, it’s definitely an experience to visit and try out if you’ve never had it before. People might see it as the new coffee (link to another article later), but the environment and culture can seem unfamiliar.

A boba shop is very similar to a coffee shop, however, it can be intimidating as the ordering conventions are different.

You’ll be posting loads of engaging content, so be sure to keep your blog organized with Categories that also allow visitors to explore more of what interests them.

Walking In

In a typical boba shop, you’ll find yourself in a similar layout as a cafe. Most boba shops follow the style of simply walking up to the cashier, ordering, and paying. Once the transaction has been made, you can hang around the shop until your order is called.

Ordering

Like other food places and cafes, please have your order ready before you walk up. This part is where it may get confusing because there are so many different choices. In the standard boba shop, there will be a menu displayed on screens above the cashier, and all the drinks will be featured for you to choose. The common way to order is to request the base drink, any toppings you desire, and then specify the sugar level and ice level. This is important to note because most drinks do not include the boba topping, so if you don’t specify boba, you may not even get the drink you expected. With that said, let’s go over some of the common terms you might find and the general etiquette.

Base Drink

In addition to the typical milk tea, most boba shops today will offer the slushes, regular tea, or even yogurt drinks.

Milk teas in general are exactly what they sound like: milk and tea. The most popular drink will likely be the house milk tea, which is the boba shop’s own blend of milk and green tea. It is generally considered the safe option, and it is a solid choice for when you want to go back to the basics or can’t decide on any new drinks to try.

Topping

The most popular boba topping is evidently the classic tapioca honey boba. You can’t go wrong with adding boba in a boba shop. Other popular toppings would be jelly, which can come in multiple flavors such as lychee, strawberry, or even mixed. Jelly toppings are generally best with regular teas because it compliments the fruity flavor, but it is also a common choice for milk teas depending on a person’s preference. Egg pudding is also another common topping, and often has a reputation for being underrated. It is recommended that you try egg pudding with milk tea at least once because it gives a fun texture to the drink. Though you are able to stack toppings, it is not often common as stacking toppings can overload the flavor and drink. In addition, toppings are usually an additional 50 cents to the cost of the drink, so keep that in mind when ordering.
